This item of revenue could be easily increased without causing any hardship, and it would be an easy means for payment of increased sanitary measures.
Markets in Hongkong do not yield such a large source of revenue as in Singapore, but this item of revenue in Hongkong will soon increase owing to the increased Market accommodation being now provided.
Singapore receives more for its water supply than Hong-kong and in view of the large water works now projected and in course of construction this item of revenue in Hongkong should very soon be increased.
Table III shows methods whereby the revenue of Hongkong can almost immediately be increased to a large extent.
The experience of the last few years has shown that the revenue from almost all sources in Hongkong has been increasing and there is every sign that it will continue to do so. The expenditure at present has received a very large temporary increase, owing to the New Territory, and many most important Public Works. It had also received a permanent increase through the increase of the staff of the Post Office, Harbour Office, Police Department and Sanitary Department, which will render their increase for a long time unnecessary.
